The Unburied Scholar's Appraisal

Karam requires the remains of a dragon, an instant-travel potion, and enough platinum to finance a respectable expedition so that he may return to his fiancée. Romantic efficiency is apparently measured in raid loot. At least the armor is excellent.

1. Find Karam Dragonforge in Rathe Mountains

  1. Travel to Rathe Mountains and find Karam Dragonforge at the human inn around +4105, +920, 4.5.
  2. Make sure Karam regards you at Indifferent or better before risking any components.
  3. Ask about `red dragonscale armor` if you want the dialogue. The practical requirement is simple: Red Dragon Scales, Vial of Swirling Smoke, and 1000 platinum.
Three requirements. One of them comes from a level 55 dragon and another costs more than many adventurers' entire estates. Karam nevertheless calls this a bargain. Merchants have always possessed a flexible relationship with arithmetic.

2. Obtain Red Dragon Scales from Lord Nagafen

  1. Travel to Nagafen's Lair and defeat Lord Nagafen, the level 55 lava dragon found around -1395, -871.
  2. Loot 1 Red Dragon Scales. Current EQL lists the scales on Lord Nagafen's active loot table.
  3. Keep the scales for Karam. They are the expensive heart of this otherwise very short quest.

3. Purchase a Vial of Swirling Smoke

  1. Acquire 1 Vial of Swirling Smoke, an instant Gate clicky potion used here as Karam's rapid trip home.
  2. EQ Legends Tools has confirmed that Raztara in Grobb has the potion. Current EQL also lists several potion merchants, but their stock is limited.
  3. If the public-instance merchant is sold out, current EQL documentation notes that newly created private instances can have the limited stock available.
  4. Budget roughly 1,200 platinum for the vial; the exact price varies with CHA and faction.
Do not arrive at Karam with exactly 1,000 platinum and discover that the teleport potion itself costs another small fortune. Budget for both purchases before beginning the final trip.

4. Complete the three-part turn-in

  1. Return to Karam Dragonforge with 1 Red Dragon Scales, 1 Vial of Swirling Smoke, and 1000 platinum pieces.
  2. Hand Karam the required scale, potion, and platinum to complete the quest.
  3. Receive Red Dragonscale Armor.
Dragon slain, teleportation supplied, travel budget funded. Karam departs to propose marriage and leaves you with the armor. For once, everyone involved receives something useful.

Tips from the Crypt

  • Check Vial of Swirling Smoke stock before scheduling the Nagafen portion. The potion is much easier to solve before everyone is standing in Rathe Mountains holding raid loot.
  • Do not rely on the reported 1,000 platinum refund when budgeting. Bring enough money to lose the full requested amount.
  • The reward is a strong melee/hybrid chest piece: AC 21, +20 STR, +10 Fire Resist, and +10 Magic Resist.
