Tashania & Ice Comet: Coin of Tash + Tarton's Wheel

Two old spell quests, one enormous tour of Norrath. Coin of Tash sends an Enchanter after ten Old Silver Coins for Tashania; Tarton's Wheel sends a Wizard after ten scattered Rods for Ice Comet. Several stops overlap closely enough that doing both together saves a gratifying amount of repeated travel.

The Unburied Scholar's Appraisal

At last, two ancient errands whose designers accidentally placed some of their scattered relics near one another. If you need both Tashania and Ice Comet, collect the coins and rods on the same circuit. Norrath will still make you cross half the world, but there is no need to cross it twice merely to satisfy tradition.

1. Start Coin of Tash, but delay Tarton's temporary chest

  1. At level 35+, visit Romar Sunto in the Temple of Solusek Ro at about +395, +95, +18. Ask about the coin and coin pouch to receive the Coin Pouch for the ten Old Silver Coins.
  2. Romar also offers the Tome of Tash for 50 gold. It contains clues to the coin locations, but this guide gives you the practical locations directly. Keep the money if you prefer. Even ancient scholarship occasionally permits thrift.
  3. For Tarton's Wheel, Sulgar waits in Everfrost Peaks at about +3032, -2395. His Tome of the Wheel and Glowing Chest explain and assemble the ten Rods.
  4. Travel tip: Potion of the Frost is an Alchemy potion with the Frost Port click effect, which teleports you directly to Everfrost Peaks. It is by far the quickest way in the game to reach Everfrost and is especially useful for visiting Sulgar, collecting the nearby Beza Rod, and reaching Halas for the Fana Old Silver Coin.
  5. Because the Glowing Chest is TEMPORARY, the safest approach is to gather the Rods first and obtain the chest only when you are ready to combine them. Do not place Rods into the temporary chest and then camp.
The Coin Pouch is a normal LORE/NO DROP ten-slot container. The Glowing Chest is the dangerous one: TEMPORARY. One persists. The other is eager to turn your afternoon into a cautionary tale.

2. Combined coin-and-rod world tour

The route below consolidates current EQL quest references with field-tested EQ Legends Tools route notes. It is organized by useful travel clusters rather than pretending there is one sacred optimal route. Collect every Old Silver Coin for Coin of Tash and every named Rod for Tarton's Wheel as you pass through each region.

  1. Ak'Anon — Coin only: Old Silver Coin (Azia), near the great wheel and not in the water, about +1990, -260, -125.
  2. South Kaladim — Coin only: Old Silver Coin (Geza), in the pool by the warrior guild, about +75, +360, -5. This pairs naturally with the Faydwer Rod stops even though no Rod is in Kaladim itself.
  3. Erudin / Erud's Crossing — Coin: Old Silver Coin (Beza) in the Erudin Palace pool/fountain outside the guild area, about +703, +740, +44. Rod: Azia in Erud's Crossing, on the ocean floor past the zombie-sailor ship, about -1162, +2340. Enduring Breath is strongly recommended for the Rod.
  4. North Qeynos / Qeynos Aqueducts — Coin: Old Silver Coin (Jaka) beneath the Temple of Life structure in the Koalindl Fish Pool, about -90, -445, -10. Rod: Heda in the Qeynos Aqueducts shark pit, about +670, +60. Same city, two submerged pieces, because dry shelves were apparently unavailable.
  5. Halas / Everfrost — Coin: Old Silver Coin (Fana) in the lake in front of Halas, left of the docks on an underwater ledge, about -138, +179. Rod: Beza in the Everfrost Peaks underwater ice cave, in the back/right house room around +5000, -5100. Sulgar is also in Everfrost at about +3032, -2395.
  6. Oggok — Coin only: Old Silver Coin (Izah), in the lake near the warrior guild at the north end, about +103, +108.
  7. Grobb — Coin only: Old Silver Coin (Ena), in the small pool near the bar close to the zone-in, about +197, -261.
  8. Neriak Commons — Best overlap of the entire route. Coin: Old Silver Coin (Heda) in the water outside The Blind Fish windows, about 0, -795, -70. Rod: Izah lies in essentially the same water, directly in front of those underwater glass windows. Pick up both before leaving.
  9. West Freeport / Oasis of Marr — Coin: Old Silver Coin (Dena). The EQ Legends Tools route sheet records the pool near the Arcstone portal at about -150, -845, -233; see the coordinate warning above. Rod: Fana in Oasis of Marr, underwater on the top floor of the stone tower in the lake, about -790, -60.
  10. North Felwithe — Coin only: Old Silver Coin (Caza), at the edge of the fishing pond, about -110, -790, -50.
  11. Lake Rathetear — Rod only: Caza in Lake Rathetear, through the underwater tunnel beneath the first island and up to the top floor of the submerged stone tower. Current EQL references place the Rod around +2782, +142, -372, with the cave entrance near +2826, -907, -171. Bring Enduring Breath.
  12. Dagnor's Cauldron — Rod only: Dena, underwater outside the Kedge Keep entrance in the lake-floor gully, around -890, -740. Enduring Breath is recommended.
  13. Lower Guk — Rod only: Ena in the Lower Guk Reanimated Hand room, around +1145, -690, -122. This is the dangerous/group stop; invisibility alone does not transform Lower Guk into a civilized place.
  14. Highpass Hold / Highpass Keep — Rod: Geza beneath the waterfall near The Tiger's Roar in Highpass Hold, about -208, +432, -14. Later, after combining the ten coins, Tarn Visilin in the High Keep library at about +75, -220 is the first Coin of Tash enchantment turn-in. Do both while you are in the area if your coin is ready.
  15. Estate of Unrest — Rod only: Jaka in the water outside the right side of the house, near the gnome spelunker tunnel/cubby, around +520, -285. The Rod can be collected while invisible without breaking invisibility.
Ten coins. Ten rods. Twenty objects scattered across Norrath, several placed underwater for no reason worth preserving. Fortunately, the Neriak, Qeynos, Erudin, Everfrost, and Highpass legs overlap well enough to make this combined route substantially less tedious than doing the quests independently.

3. Finish Coin of Tash for Tashania

  1. Place all ten Old Silver Coins into the Coin Pouch and combine them to create the Coin of Tash.
  2. Go to Tarn Visilin in the High Keep library at about +75, -220. Give him the Coin of Tash and receive the Glowing Coin of Tash.
  3. Travel to Neriak Third Gate and find Mizr N`Mar in the library at about +913, -1314. Give him the Glowing Coin of Tash and receive the Gleaming Coin of Tash.
  4. Travel to Erudin and find Raine Beteria in the library at about -1050, -212. Give her the Gleaming Coin of Tash and receive the Radiant Coin of Tash. If your faction is too low, current EQL notes that she returns the coin; Illusion: Erudite may help.
  5. Return to Romar Sunto in the Temple of Solusek Ro at about +393, +90 and give him the Radiant Coin of Tash.
  6. Receive Spell: Tashania. Current EQL lists Tashania as an Enchanter level 41 spell.
Do not make these NPC turn-ins while invisible. Current EQL explicitly warns against it. Sneak is acceptable. After twenty ground spawns, losing the coin to invisibility would be an offensively mundane ending.

4. Finish Tarton's Wheel for Ice Comet

  1. Once all ten Rods are safely in your normal inventory, obtain the Glowing Chest from Sulgar in Everfrost Peaks if you do not already have it. Remember: the chest is TEMPORARY.
  2. Place Rods Azia, Beza, Caza, Dena, Ena, Fana, Geza, Heda, Izah, and Jaka into the Glowing Chest and combine them.
  3. The combine creates Staff of the Wheel and Star of Eyes. Staff of the Wheel carries +10 INT, +10 HP, and +10 Mana; Star of Eyes has an instant Identify click from any slot.
  4. Give Staff of the Wheel and Star of Eyes to Sulgar. Current EQL's Tarton's Wheel page states that he awards Spell: Ice Comet directly and does not return the Staff or Star.
  5. Receive Spell: Ice Comet. Current EQL lists it as a Wizard level 49 spell.
Old P99 and classic-era guides describe Sulgar returning Rune of Frost and Rune of the Astral, followed by a Research combine for Ice Comet. That is not the current EQL completion path. On EQL, Sulgar gives the Ice Comet spell after the Staff + Star exchange. Do not resurrect obsolete research instructions merely because they are ancient. I am ancient. I know the difference.

5. What the two spells do on current EQL

Tashania is the Enchanter reward. Current EQL lists it at level 41, 30 mana, a 1.00-second cast, unresistable, and focused on lowering a target's magic resistance. It is the stronger member of the classic Tash line and remains useful whenever magic resistance needs to be stripped away before the real work begins.

Ice Comet is the Wizard reward. Current EQL lists it at level 49 for 808 cold damage, 203 mana, a 5.00-second cast, 1.50-second recast, and a -10 cold resist adjustment. A large chunk of ice falling from the sky is not subtle, but subtlety has never improved damage-per-mana.

Two genuinely important spells at the end of one sprawling collection circuit. Tashania makes stubborn magic defenses more cooperative. Ice Comet makes stubborn creatures more dead. At last, rewards commensurate with the walking.

Tips from the Crypt

  • All ten Tarton's Wheel Rods can be picked up while invisible, and picking them up does not break invisibility. This is especially useful in the less hospitable stops.
  • Do the Neriak Commons coin and Izah Rod together. They are essentially at the same Blind Fish landmark and are the clearest free efficiency in the route.
  • Pair the North Qeynos coin with the Qeynos Aqueducts Heda Rod, the Erudin Palace coin with the Erud's Crossing Azia Rod, and the Halas coin with the Everfrost Beza Rod/Sulgar visit.
  • If you are collecting both quests across several play sessions, keep the Tarton's Rods in normal inventory and wait to request/use the temporary Glowing Chest until you are ready to combine.
  • The Coin of Tash and Tarton's Wheel pieces reuse the same ten identifier names (Azia through Jaka) in different locations. Keep the two checklists separate. Norrath has provided enough confusion without your bags contributing.
  • The current EQL pages should win over old classic/P99 mechanics when they conflict. In particular: Tashania is currently listed as level 41 on EQL, and Tarton's Wheel currently awards Ice Comet directly rather than requiring the old rune research combine.
