Thex Mallet Quest (Reaper of the Dead)

Earn enough standing with The Dead, obtain a Tattered Cloth Note from Kizdean Gix, use it to spawn Commander Windstream in Befallen, assemble the three-piece Thex Mallet, then give the finished mallet to Loveal S`Nez for the Reaper of the Dead. On EQL the Reaper is a Shadow Knight-only, unlimited-charge Promised Renewal clicky at level 45.

Three mallet pieces in Befallen, one faction wall in Neriak, and a weapon that grants a Shadow Knight a delayed five-thousand-point heal. The old versions of this relic carried a very different spell and only a single charge. EQL has improved the artifact considerably. I approve of this rare outbreak of progress.

1. Fix The Dead faction before you start

  1. Reach Amiable (+100) or better with The Dead before planning the final turn-in to Loveal S`Nez in Neriak Third Gate.
  2. Current EQL documentation recommends several ways to raise The Dead, including the Messages For Neriak quest or killing opposing high-elf/gnome casters such as Linara Parlone. Linara currently gives +47 The Dead per kill.
  3. Dark Elf form can help with some interactions, but do not mistake appearance for faction. Loveal's final requirement still matters.
Befallen is not the real gatekeeper here. Bureaucracy is. Secure Amiable standing with The Dead first, unless you enjoy finishing a dungeon only to be rejected by a clerk in a robe.

2. Obtain the Tattered Cloth Note from Kizdean Gix

  1. The quest dialogue begins with Loveal S`Nez in Neriak Third Gate, who directs you to Kizdean Gix in West Commonlands.
  2. Find Kizdean Gix near the tollbooth / southern road.
  3. Say the password `Utalk Adarev Otcin` to receive A Tattered Cloth Note. Current EQL documentation notes that this first interaction has looser faction workarounds than the final turn-in.
  4. Take the note to Befallen.

3. Spawn Commander Windstream and take the Mallet Stem

  1. In Befallen, find Skeleton Lrodd near the well. He is documented as a guaranteed spawn and indifferent to players.
  2. Give A Tattered Cloth Note to Skeleton Lrodd.
  3. This spawns Commander Windstream on level 3, seated on the chair/throne through the invisible wall.
  4. Kill Commander Windstream and loot the Mallet Stem. Keep it: the Stem is the container for the final mallet combine.

4. Farm the Head and Hilt

  1. On the same lower floor, find An Elf Skeleton. From the bottom of the well it is just beyond the fake wall and left, near the spikes and hanging dwarf torso; from the normal descent it is beyond the second locked door at the bottom of the broken staircase.
  2. Kill An Elf Skeleton until you have both Mallet Head and Mallet Hilt.
  3. The skeleton can drop either piece or neither and has a documented 6:40 respawn.
Naturally, the skeleton may possess the head, the hilt, or absolutely nothing of use. Settle in. The dead are patient; the loot table has learned from them.

5. Assemble the Thex Mallet

  1. Place Mallet Head and Mallet Hilt inside the Mallet Stem.
  2. Press Combine to create the Thex Mallet.
  3. Return to Loveal S`Nez in Neriak Third Gate.

6. Trade the mallet for the Reaper

  1. Make certain Loveal S`Nez considers you Amiable or better with The Dead.
  2. Give the completed Thex Mallet to Loveal S`Nez.
  3. Receive Reaper of the Dead. Current EQL also records +100 The Dead and +15 Queen Cristanos Thex faction, with corresponding losses to several opposing factions.
Now this interests me. The Reaper of the Dead grants Promised Renewal from any slot: a delayed 5000-point heal on a Shadow Knight, reusable every twenty minutes. Do not sell this to the first merchant you see. I will know.

Tips from the Crypt

  • The current EQL quest page specifically calls Messages For Neriak a simple way to raise The Dead. If faction is the obstacle, solve it before committing to Befallen.
  • Linara Parlone in Najena is a documented +47 The Dead kill and has a roughly four-minute respawn on current EQL, but killing her heavily damages Keepers of the Art and allied factions. Choose your enemies with some awareness of future errands.
  • Both Thex Mallet and Reaper of the Dead are tradable on current EQL. That can bypass the quest for someone who only wants the item, but it does not change Loveal's faction requirement for personally completing the turn-in.
  • Older P99 references describe Reaper of the Dead as a one-charge Complete Heal item. That is obsolete for EQL and must not be used when evaluating the current reward.
