Call of Flame Quest

A long Ranger spell quest that begins with Lily Ashwood in Greater Faydark, sends you through Ganelorn Oast and Kithicor, demands three substantial equipment pieces including the Electrum-Bladed Wakizashi from Vampire Teeth, and ends with a level 53 poacher. The reward is Call of Flame, EQL's fast-casting level 49 Ranger fire spell.

Now this interests me. On current EQL, Call of Flame strikes for 300 fire damage with a 0.5-second cast, 106 mana cost, and 10-second recast. The old versions of this spell were considerably more lethargic. A quest that ends by teaching a Ranger to hurl fire quickly is at least honest about its ambitions.

1. Take Lily Ashwood's sealed letter

  1. Travel to Greater Faydark and find Lily Ashwood near Kelethin. Current EQL NPC data places her around (-5, 411).
  2. Follow the Ranger dialogue about Ganelorn Oast and agree to carry Lily's letter.
  3. Receive Love Letter (Sealed).
The path to a level 49 fire spell begins, naturally, as a romantic courier service. Deliver the letter. Resist asking why the flames require courtship.

2. Deliver the letter to Ganelorn Oast

  1. Travel to East Karana and find Ganelorn Oast near the Barbarian village. Current EQL NPC data places him at (-3459, -1785).
  2. Give Ganelorn Oast Love Letter (Sealed).
  3. Receive Albino Rattlesnake Eggs.

3. Take the eggs to Kithicor

  1. Travel to Kithicor Forest and find the Ranger guildmaster Kithicor. Current EQL NPC data places him around (-571, 1962).
  2. Give Kithicor the Albino Rattlesnake Eggs.
  3. Receive Symbol of Achievement.
  4. Return to Ganelorn Oast in East Karana and give him Symbol of Achievement.
  5. Receive Note of Credit.
You have now crossed zones to preserve an endangered snake, returned with a symbolic medal, and still have not learned the spell. Ganelorn has standards. Mostly traveling standards.

4. Pick up Ganelorn's Gift

  1. Take Note of Credit to Aanina Rockfinder in North Kaladim. Current EQL NPC data places her around (401, -156).
  2. Give Aanina Rockfinder the Note of Credit.
  3. Receive Gift. Keep it for Ganelorn's later four-item hand-in.

5. Gather the three equipment pieces

  1. In Nagafen's Lair, kill imp protectors until you obtain Burnt Sash. Current EQL data lists imp protectors around levels 44-48 and the sash in their rare loot table.
  2. In Lower Guk, camp a reanimated hand at roughly (1126, -688). Current EQL data lists this level 39-41 spawn at 100% on a 9.5-minute respawn. Loot Adamantite Band, which is categorized as a rare drop.
  3. Complete Vampire Teeth in Mistmoore Castle and obtain Electrum-Bladed Wakizashi.
  4. At this point you should have Gift, Burnt Sash, Adamantite Band, and Electrum-Bladed Wakizashi.
Here lies the actual labor: SolB, Lower Guk, and Mistmoore. The electrum blade has its own quest because apparently one dungeon component was insufficiently ceremonial.

6. Give all four items to Ganelorn together

  1. Return to Ganelorn Oast in East Karana.
  2. Give Gift, Burnt Sash, Adamantite Band, and Electrum-Bladed Wakizashi to Ganelorn TOGETHER.
  3. Do not split the four pieces into separate turn-ins. Give all four required items to Ganelorn together.
  4. The successful hand-in spawns Vance Bearstalker nearby as your final test.
Have your group in East Karana before this hand-in. Vance spawns immediately and begins moving. Triggering a level 53 target before everyone arrives is an elegant way to manufacture regret.

7. Kill Vance Bearstalker

  1. Track down Vance Bearstalker in East Karana. Current EQL data places his spawn around (-2713, -801), after which he paths through the zone.
  2. Kill Vance. On current EQL data he is level 53, has roughly 9,000 HP, summons, and has high magic resistance.
  3. Loot Poacher's Head. Current EQL data lists it as his guaranteed quest drop.
  4. Return Poacher's Head to Ganelorn Oast.
  5. Receive Call of Flame.
At last. Call of Flame. Three hundred points of fire delivered in half a second on current EQL. After this much walking, the spell has the decency to be quick.

8. The reward on current EQL

Call of Flame is a Ranger level 49 Evocation spell. Current EQL spell data lists 300 fire damage, 106 mana, a 0.50-second cast time, 10-second recast, 200 range, and a single-target Fire resist check.

Older classic references such as Project 1999 describe a substantially weaker and slower version of the spell. Those historical values are useful for confirming the quest's age, but they are not the values used on EQ Legends.

Tips from the Crypt

  • Complete Vampire Teeth before the final East Karana hand-in. The Electrum-Bladed Wakizashi is a required component, not an alternate reward path.
  • The Lower Guk reanimated hand has a short documented 9.5-minute respawn on current EQL, but the Adamantite Band itself is rare. Bring patience; undeath does not confer better loot etiquette.
  • Imp protectors in Nagafen's Lair are social, have relatively large aggro ranges, and are immune to fire-based spells according to current EQL NPC documentation. Pull carefully.
  • If you are assembling the quest over several sessions, keep Gift, Burnt Sash, Adamantite Band, and the wakizashi clearly separated from vendor trash. Ganelorn has no interest in hearing how the wrong bag was sold.
  • The only genuine subquest dependency here is Vampire Teeth. The letter, eggs, symbol, credit note, and gift are stages of Call of Flame itself.
