EverQuest Legends Quest Guide · Recorded by The Unburied Scholar

Zimel's Blades (SoulFire)

The practical route to SoulFire: assemble a sealed note, prove your generosity and bravery, recover the sword's hilt, take a testimony from Sir Lucan D'Lere, and deliver the finished proof to Brother Hayle. Much of the original investigation can be skipped on EQL, which is a rare outbreak of mercy.

The Unburied Scholar's Appraisal

SoulFire is not merely another old sword dragged from a forgotten cupboard. It is a genuine artifact, useful in its own right and required for both The Fiery Avenger and The Torrid Corruptor. Yes, you may need to complete this quest more than once. Restrain your surprise.

1. Assemble A Sealed Note

  1. Brew or obtain Bog Juice. The EQL recipe is 1 Bottle, 1 Snake Scales, and 1 Water Flask; Brewing trivial is 21.
  2. Bake or obtain Edible Goo. The EQL recipe is 1 Fire Beetle Eye and 1 Rat Ears; Baking trivial is 21. Do not eat the quest component. This should not require saying, yet history insists otherwise.
  3. At Seafarer's Roost in East Freeport, buy 4 Drom's Champagne from the bartender and wait for Tykar Renlin to appear.
  4. Give Tykar Renlin all 4 Drom's Champagne and receive Bunker Cell #1.
  5. Go to the prison near the arena in West Freeport. Give Bog Juice, Edible Goo, and Bunker Cell #1 to the NPC named a prisoner. Receive H. K. 102.
  6. Take H. K. 102 to Assistant Kiolna in the Highpass Keep bank and hand it in for A Sealed Note.
Tykar Renlin is part of a cycling spawn at Seafarer's Roost. If he is absent, wait for his turn. Remaining available when needed would apparently diminish the romance of the affair.

2. Earn your Testimony

  1. Obtain A Spider Venom Sac from a giant spider and buy a medium Cloth Shirt.
  2. Find Altunic Jartin in East Commonlands. EQLWiki notes that he wanders and that the Cloth Shirt turn-in requires Amiable standing. Give him the Cloth Shirt and receive the Token of Generosity.
  3. Find Merko Quetalis in the courtyard of the Hall of Truth in North Freeport. Give him A Spider Venom Sac and receive the Token of Bravery.
  4. Give Merko Quetalis the Token of Generosity and Token of Bravery. This spawns Guard Willia in the nearby sewer.
  5. Move quickly into the sewer, kill Guard Willia before she runs away, and loot the Token of Truth.
  6. Return the Token of Truth to Merko Quetalis and receive your Testimony. Keep it separate in your mind from Sir Lucan's similarly named evidence. Quest designers have always enjoyed paperwork with nearly identical labels.

3. Recover the Glowing Sword Hilt

  1. Travel to Mistmoore Castle and camp Xicotl in the pool room.
  2. Xicotl is now a guaranteed spawn on EQ Legends, so there is no longer a rare-spawn or placeholder cycle to endure.
  3. Kill Xicotl and loot the Glowing Sword Hilt. The hilt is a guaranteed drop from him.
For once, Norrath has removed an inconvenience rather than inventing one. Xicotl now appears reliably. Kill him, take the hilt, and move on before someone changes their mind.

4. Obtain the Brilliant Sword of Faith

  1. In West Freeport, kill Sir Lucan D'Lere. Defeating the living guildmaster spawns his undead form.
  2. Kill the undead Sir Lucan D'Lere and loot Testimony of Truth.
  3. Raise Knights of Truth to Warmly or better before the next hand-in. EQLWiki specifically records Warmly as sufficient for this step.
  4. Find Valeron Dushire on the balcony of the Hall of Truth in North Freeport and give him Testimony of Truth.
  5. Receive the Brilliant Sword of Faith.

5. Brother Hayle and the final turn-in

  1. Raise Priests of Life to Warmly or better, then travel to the prison area of Splitpaw Lair and find Brother Hayle.
  2. Give A Sealed Note to Brother Hayle ALONE. He returns the opened Note.
  3. Confirm that you now have the opened Note, your Testimony from Merko Quetalis, the Glowing Sword Hilt, and the Brilliant Sword of Faith.
  4. Give all four of those items to Brother Hayle for the final turn-in.
  5. Receive SoulFire.
At last. SoulFire. Twenty-three damage, Promised Renewal, and enough importance to become a required sacrifice in two greater weapon quests. Keep it close while it is yours. This one has teeth.

6. If you are pursuing Fiery Avenger or Torrid Corruptor

The Fiery Avenger consumes SoulFire during the Inte Akera turn-ins. The Torrid Corruptor also requires a completed SoulFire for its final hand-in.

Because SoulFire is LORE, the straightforward path for completing both is to finish Zimel's Blades once, consume that SoulFire during Fiery Avenger, then repeat Zimel's Blades for the SoulFire needed by Torrid Corruptor. Apparently one pilgrimage was judged insufficient.

Tips from the Crypt

  • Much of the original investigation and dialogue chain is not required for the practical completion path documented on EQL. This guide follows the shorter item-and-turn-in route.
  • Do not make the Brother Hayle trip until you have the other final pieces ready. The route to his cell is tedious enough once.
  • For Knights of Truth, the current EQL guide points to Fabian's Strings or the Paladin Message route as faction options when needed.
  • If SoulFire is only a stepping stone toward The Fiery Avenger or The Torrid Corruptor, resist the urge to treat it as disposable clutter. Powerful artifacts notice such disrespect. Or perhaps only I do.
